Overview
PassMic is a wireless microphone application for iOS and macOS, designed for classrooms, workshops, and lecture halls. Your privacy is important to us. PassMic operates entirely over your local WiFi network and does not require an internet connection.
Data Collection
PassMic does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to external servers or third parties.
What PassMic Uses
1. Microphone Audio
- Purpose: Stream your voice to the Mac server in real time
- Storage: Audio is not recorded or stored on disk
- Transmission: Streamed only over your local WiFi network to the connected Mac
- Duration: Audio data exists only during active transmission
2. Display Name
- Purpose: Identify speakers in the classroom queue
- Entry: You choose your own display name within the app
- Storage: Stored locally on your device only
- Transmission: Sent only to the Mac server on your local network
- Visibility: Visible to other devices connected to the same Mac server on the same WiFi network
3. Local Network Discovery
- Purpose: Find Mac servers on your WiFi network using Bonjour/mDNS
- Storage: No data is stored
- Transmission: Standard local network discovery protocol (mDNS) only
4. Queue State
- Purpose: Manage the speaking queue during a session
- Storage: Held in memory only — not written to disk
- Transmission: Synchronized between connected devices on the local network in real time
- Duration: Discarded when the session ends or the server is closed
Data Security
- All communication occurs over your local WiFi network only
- No data is sent to external servers or the internet
- No cloud storage is used
- No third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services are integrated into the app
- Audio is not recorded or saved anywhere, including temporary disk caches
- No persistent logs containing personal information are created by PassMic
Network Access
PassMic requires the following permissions:
- Local Network Access — to discover and connect to Mac servers on your WiFi
- Microphone Access — to capture and stream audio (iOS app)
PassMic does not:
- Access the internet
- Connect to external servers
- Upload any data outside your local network
- Track your usage or behavior
Note: Any device on the same local WiFi network can discover and connect to an active PassMic Mac server. There is no password or authentication. We recommend using PassMic only on trusted classroom or institutional networks.
Third-Party Services
PassMic does not integrate with any third-party analytics platforms, advertising networks, or cloud services. Apple may collect anonymous, aggregated crash report data through the App Store as part of its standard platform services. PassMic does not receive personal information through these reports.
Children's Privacy
PassMic is designed for educational settings and is safe for use by children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children or adults. Display names are chosen by the user and are shared only with other participants connected to the same local session.
Your Rights
Because PassMic does not collect or store personal data on external servers, there is no data to access, delete, modify, or export. All session data exists only temporarily in memory during active use and is not retained afterward. Because no personal data is collected, rights under regulations such as GDPR and CCPA are not applicable in practice.
Technical Details
For transparency, here is what happens technically during a session:
iOS App
- Requests microphone permission
- Discovers Mac servers via Bonjour (local network only)
- Establishes a TCP connection to the selected server
- Streams audio in real time (not recorded or written to disk)
- Sends your chosen display name to the server
- Receives queue status updates in real time
Mac App
- Advertises itself via Bonjour (local network only)
- Accepts connections from iOS clients on the same WiFi network
- Receives and decodes real-time audio streams
- Routes audio through a virtual audio input device (HAL plugin), compatible with apps such as Zoom, Teams, and OBS
- Manages the speaking queue of connected clients in memory
- Does not write session data to disk
No Cloud, No Storage
- Audio data is never written to disk
- No databases or persistent storage
- No network communication beyond the local WiFi network
